Our Story
In 1996 a core group within Global Family – Katharine and Makasha Roske, John Zwerver, Carolyn Anderson, David Fischer, and Sara Senet – had a dream of co-creating a land based living laboratory for the evolution of consciousness and to cultivate a healthy, thriving new Earth. This dream moved into reality when Sara found property in a lush canyon in the mountains of northern New Mexico in the Mora Valley.
The core group convened and after immersing themselves in the beauty of the towering pines, stunning cliffs, rolling pasture, and meandering river, they sat in silence in a green meadow along the stream. Practicing inspired insights, they asked the elementals and oversoul of the land – “Are we the ones to steward this exquisite landscape?”. A Hummingbird flew into the middle of the circle, affirming their inner guidance of a resounding “yes!”. The six of them acquired the land and thus began the grounding of Hummingbird Community.
In 2016, Hummingbird Community celebrated its 20th anniversary and felt itself emerging in a new way. The Community recognized that it was time to step out from under the umbrella of Global Family and created its own non-profit, Hummingbird Transformational Living Center.
From the summer of 1998 until the spring of 2022 a wide spectrum of programs were held in this healing and transformational environment. Partnerships were formed with Global Family, Pachamama Alliance, Earth Guardians, Living Co-creation, and Collective Legacy serving youth leadership, ecological sustainability, spiritual growth, artistic expression, and co-creative community building. Over the course of decades, permaculture certification courses, biodynamic training, vision quests, and retreats addressing conscious evolution were experienced. We have hosted hundreds of visitors, held work parties, and rented our facility to many aligned organizations. In the summer of 2021, our extended community joined us in honoring our 25th anniversary with ceremony and celebration.
Through the years we have built homes, planted gardens, and stewarded the forest. We have grown deep roots by sharing 26 years of growth, experiencing metamorphosis, and successful learning through community development challenges. Our community has grown to 20, and many have been here since our first pioneering years.
In the spring of 2022, the Hermit’s Peak / Calf Canyon Fire swept through this sacred land burning to the ground our extensive campground facility. In this transformational period following the fire, we continue to listen to guidance regarding the pathway forward and the fulfillment of our purpose.
